#ListenTo 8 Quintessential Birit Songs

Since we’re all sad from what went down at this year’s (or last year’s) Miss Universe pageant, the best remedy for our sadness is singing. Karaoke, in particular. If you’re in need of karaoke songs for maximum cathartic effect, here are 8 quintessential birit songs for you to sing:

8. Basang Basa sa Ulan (Aegis)

Drenched in the Rain, translated. This is everyone’s favorite karaoke song. The challenge is to sing the song in the same octave as it was originally sung. Birit moment: The key change

7. Through the Fire (Chaka Khan)

Chaka Khan! This song is far from chaka, because this is a birit classic. Birit moment: “Through the test of tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime”

6. Listen (Beyoncé)

A favorite in singing competitions, singers auditioning sing this song to flaunt their range. This is the quintessential diva song in her catalog. Birit moment: “I’ve tried and tried to say what’s on my mind, YOU should have known oh”

5. Through the Rain (Mariah Carey)

Classic music video. This was during Mariah’s Charmbracelet era. Birit moment: This is one of Mariah’s softer songs, but the song soars to birit levels by the last line of the bridge, then key change.

4. When You Believe (Whitney Houston & Mariah Carey)

Diva showdown! This is from the animated film, The Prince of EgyptBirit moment: The glorious bridge (“…says hope is very neaaaar”) and final chorus

3. Dadalhin (Regine Velasquez-Alcasid)

Will Bring, translated, as in The wind will just bring my dream away. The primera biritera of the Philippines, Asia’s songbird. Sad lyrics + epic melody = karaoke classic. Birit moment: “Ang lahat ng ito’y pinangako moooooo-oh-oh-oh-ohhh”

2. And I am Telling You I’m Not Going (Jennifer Hudson version)

Another one from the Dreamgirls soundtrack, for which Jennifer Hudson won her Grammy. Her performance in the movie was her breakthrough moment into stardom. Birit moment: “Tear down the mountains, yeah scream and shout…” to the end

This song was originally sung by Jennifer Holliday, who also gave us this iconic moment from American Idol. Slay!

1. I Will Always Love You (Whitney Houston)

Arguably, the mother of all birit songs. Birit moment: “And IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII”

8 Music Videos that Break the Time/Space Continuum

1. Lauryn Hill – Doo Wop (That Thing)

One side you’re in the 60’s, on the other you’re in the 90’s. But it’s happening in the same block/neighborhood. All at once. And we have 2 decade-appropriately styled Lauryn Hills in the video.

2. Destiny’s Child – Emotion

Three different stories of heartbreak and loss that are seemingly unrelated, then in the end, we find out they’re all related. The best part is when the members switch screens. It also spawned this hilarious parody.

3. Kyla – Nasaan Ka Na (trans.: Where Are You Now)

I believe this local video was inspired by the previous one (and the next). This shows two sides of a relationship that has gone cold.

4. Cibo Matto – Sugar Water

This is my earliest memory of watching MTV (when it actually lived up to its name, by showing actual music videos) and going “OMG,” “WTF,” “How did they do that?” all at the same time. The left side runs normally, while the right side runs in reverse.

5. The Chemical Brothers – Let Forever Be

From the same director as above, Michel Gondry, the father of trippy music videos, makes IMO one of the trippiest videos of all time.

6. Two Door Cinema Club – Come Back Home

I’m pretty sure the director of this video was (at least, partly) inspired by Mr. Gondry. Its concept is somewhat like a mixture of the two previous ones.

7. Zedd – Stay The Night

The most recent video on the list, director Daniel “Cloud” Campos (he’s the dancing guy in it), makes clever use of light bulbs as a teleportation device — one minute you’re in your apartment, the next minute you’re in your significant other’s bed.

8. Kylie Minogue – Come Into My World

Also from Michel Gondry, IMO one of the best pop videos of all time. It’s fun watching the scene loop over and over and seeing the different little details that change. It’s also clever how all the Kylie’s seem to interact with each other and sing together during the chorus.
